A CHEF from York is planning to cycle from one end of the country to the other to raise £10,000 for the British Lung Foundation.
Malcolm Storey, 32, of Ings View, Rawcliffe, will be riding from John O Groats to Lands End in April next year with his sister Jayne, who lives in Denmark, to raise cash for the charity after their mother, Margaret was diagnosed with emphysema.
The pair plan on riding more than 1,000 miles in just ten days at about 100 miles a day.
Malcolm said his mother, who is in her 50s and lives in Goole, was diagnosed with the disease in February this year and his grandfather died of the same illness.
He said: “Mum’s diagnosis was a bit of a shock and there have been some big lifestyle changes for her and there will probably be more in the future for our whole family.
“We feel the Lung Foundation do some great work in proving support for those who suffer this illness with the palliative care they provide.
“We aim to auction all equipment so we can raise the optimum amount of money.”
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lungs are destroyed.
Malcolm, who works as the head chef at the Pavillion in Fulford, said his company Best Western had already offered to sponsor the pair and they will be staying in Best Western hotels on their journey.
But he said he would now like to hear from businesses who might be able to help with sponsorship or equipment.
