The MP for Selby said there needs to be “a very broad look at safety” at Kellingley Colliery following the death of a worker from the Selby area at the pit.
Nigel Adams was speaking after visiting the mine this morning where he spoke to mine workers.
He said: “I have been to the pit and spoken to one-or-two of the miners. It’s a very sad day for the community and industry. My thoughts and prayers are with my constituent.
“What’s important is that family and colleagues have as much support and help as they need then we can try to establish what caused the roof collapse.”
He said: “It’s 2011 and we should not be losing miners in such circumstances.”
Meanwhile Coun James Alexander, Labour Leader for City of York Council, said: "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families and those affected by the tragic accident yesterday. As a North Yorkshire council we are keenly aware of the debt we owe to miners and it reminds us that even in today's modern world this is still a dangerous occupation."
