Updated: A MAN was found unconscious with serious head injuries after being assaulted in a York street.
The 47-year-old local man was yesterday in a “serious, but not life threatening” condition in hospital after being found lying in Walmgate.
Police cordoned off and examined a blood covered area in nearby Dixons Yard next to Il Paradiso del Cibo restaurant for a number of hours to gather evidence.
A police spokesman said: “A taxi driver saw him in the street and called the police.
“They first thought he had fallen, but after examining him they realised he had been assaulted.”
The man, who was found lying outside El Gaucho restaurant in Walmgate at about 5am on Saturday, was taken to York Hospital with serious head injuries following the incident, a police spokesman said.
Police remained at the scene for more than five hours after the man was found.
Following investigations a 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, a police spokesman said.
Inquiries were slightly complicated as both of the men spoke Italian, said the spokesman.
No weapons are believed to have been used in the incident.
