PUPILS, friends and relatives have paid tribute to a popular York science teacher who died suddenly while out cycling.

Stephen Brian, 46, who taught at All Saints RC School, off The Mount, for more than 20 years, died on Wednesday after he came off his bike on Cranbrook Road, in Acomb, near his home in Carr Lane.

North Yorkshire Police are investigating, but have said no one else is believed to have been involved and they are not treating it as suspicious.

Mr Brian’s widow, Gillian, said: “It’s a real shock. He was a big man with a big heart.”

All Saints head teacher, Bill Scriven, said: “The whole school community is struggling to come to terms with the tragic news of the death of Stephen Brian, a well-loved teacher. He was an inspirational science teacher to many students and was such an integral part of the school. He always gave so much, supporting retreats, language exchanges, and other residentials.

“He was a passionate member of our chaplaincy team, leading staff prayers throughout the year.

“The governors, his colleagues, all students and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to his wife and family during this difficult time.”

Mr Brian played a full part in school life, being involved in many school plays and pantomimes.

A tribute page called RIP Mr Brian has been set up on Facebook and has nearly 700 followers.

One tribute read: “There’s one more angel in heaven, there’s one more star in the sky. Sir we will never forget you, it’s tough but we’ve got to get by... RIP Mr Brian.”

Another said: “Actually couldn’t believe it... such tragic news. Mr Brian you made science fun & the school has lost a huge asset.

“You’ll be missed so much by so many.”

Mr Brian was a lay reader for many years at St Chad’s Church, Knavesmire.

The Rev Simon Stanley, the vicar at St Chad’s, said: “Stephen was a splendid man and a fine preacher – as a lay reader he was qualified to preach and his preaching often reflected his personality – questioning, very accessible and often amusing.

“He was very approachable and had a very good sense of humour.

“He was a model Christian and an example to everybody really. He was very popular with people.”

The accident happened at about 2.30pm on Wednesday and Mr Brian was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where he died.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “It appears Mr Brian was taken ill while he was on his bike and has fallen off and hit his head.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, but we are not treating it as suspicious or looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Mr Brian leaves his widow and two stepsons, David, 29, and James, 21.
