FANS of the world-famous Flying Scotsman have been getting creative to make unusual replicas of their favourite steam engine.

The models were created in a competition launched by the National Railway Museum (NRM) earlier this year.

It encouraged people to create a mini-Flying Scotsman out of “anything they could get their hands on”.

The winning creations will now join the huge collection of railway artefacts at the Leeman Road site. John McGoldrick, curator of museum collections, said: “These lovingly-made models demonstrate the excitement and anticipation for the locomotive’s return to mainline operation and we’re certain that we’ll be submitting even more Scotsman-related pieces as we get closer to it’s return in 2012.”

The locomotive is due to return to the NRM in late spring following a restoration project.
