PUPILS at a York school are to launch a special award in memory of an inspirational teacher who died earlier this year.
Staff at All Saints’ RC School have put plans in place to remember science teacher Stephen Brian, 46, who died in October after he came off his bike near his home in Carr Lane.
The award will be given to the “the most inspirational member of staff at the school” at All Saints’ annual prize giving ceremony next year.
Because Mr Brian also led staff prayers, the school will be dedicating one of its chaplaincy rooms at the upper school site to him.
Bill Scriven, head teacher, said: “It’s only fitting that we remember Stephen Brian in this way.
“Because he was such an inspirational teacher, the pupils themselves came up with the idea of the award which is for any member of the school staff, not just for teachers, who have been an inspiration.”
After his death, Mr Brian’s widow, Gillian, made a plea through The Press for people to sign the organ donor register.
She said one of her late husband’s kidneys had gone to a 40-year-old woman, the other kidney to a 50-year-old man and he had given sight to two different people.
The tendons from his legs and his heart valves were also donated.
Mr Scriven said that as a result of Mr Brian’s belief in organ donation, he had himself signed up to become an organ donor.
Literature on organ donation had also been made available in school for students and staff.
He said: “We are currently looking at how we can incorporate it into the curriculum.”
The Press ran its Lifesavers campaign last year to raise awareness of organ donation and to urge people to join the register.
