MOTORISTS in East Yorkshire were left facing repair bills after a supermarket fuel pump malfunctioned.

Shoppers at the Tesco store in Market Weighton who filled their cars up found the pumps were working slowly, and later found their cars shuddered to a halt.

One woman, who did not want to be named, told how the engine management light blinked on seconds before the car broke down.

“The car was towed to a garage on Monday and I have still not got it back,” she said.

“The mechanic told me that it was water in the petrol, and Tesco have since told me the same. I went into Tesco to complain and they had an A4 sheet of paper there with other names and addresses of people that it had happened to.”

A spokesman for Tesco confirmed a number of customers had been affected by the problem.

“A handful of customers have been affected by a problem with unleaded petrol from our petrol filling station,” he said.

“Due to a faulty seal, there was water in the unleaded fuel tank. The filling station was closed as soon as this problem was recognised. We are speaking to those customers affected to resolve their issues.”

The woman said: “I don’t know how much it will cost yet but it won’t be cheap to fix. He’s had to take out all my injectors because they had water in them.”
