York St John University degree results 2010 - Part 1

Proud parents, friends and university staff watched as the first graduation ceremonies for York St John University students took place yesterday, with saw masters and bachelors degrees, postgraduate diplomas and foundation degrees of the arts, science and business, handed out to graduates at the Minster by the university’s chancellor, the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

James Caan, the entrepreneur, leader of the Ethnic Minority Business Task Force, and star of the BBC’s Dragon’s Den series, was also at the ceremony to be presented with an honorary title.

Mr Caan became an honorary doctor of business administration, in acknowledgement of his success, which he achieved with no formal business education.

The doctorate was also in recognition of his charity work with the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Team, and the James Caan Foundation, which supports the education of disadvantaged children in Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

Also honoured this year was Valerie Taylor, a physiotherapist and founder of a rehabilitation centre for the poor in Bangladesh, who will be given an honorary doctorate in health sciences and Janakiraman Ramachandran, founder of the NAESEY project, which has helped 1.5 million people get out of poverty and into employment in South India, who will receive an honorary degree.
