A PRIMARY school in York has backed its local church’s plans to turn a pub into a community centre.
As reported previously, St Paul’s Church in Watson Street, Holgate, wants to convert The Volunteer Arms in the street into a community centre.
The church has objected to plans by the current owners, Punch Taverns, to turn the pub into housing. Richard Knowles, head teacher at the nearby St Paul’s CE Primary School, has now written to City of York Council, siding with the church.
He wrote: “The school would welcome the availability of additional community facilities in the immediate vicinity.” He said the school objected to the housing plan, and supported the church’s plan.
