ACOMB Hockey Club women made it ten wins on the trot with a weekend double over Netherwood and, in a thriller, Cleckheaton.
After two opening defeats, the run of success has lifted the Tangerines to third in Yorkshire League division three, one point off first place with a game in hand on the top two.
They visit Horsforth this Saturday before a top-of-the-table clash with City of York III at Energise on January 19.
The first leg of the double-header brought Acomb a 2-0 win.
They were in control for most of the game and took the lead through skipper Kerry Woods, driving through the centre into the ‘D’ and skilfully beating a Netherwood defender before striking into the bottom left corner.
The second goal game from a short corner, Sally Fairweather slipping the ball to Georgi Wood on the right, who got round a defender and returned the ball to corner taker Woods to knock it home by the left post.
Player of the match was right-winger Vicki Wrigley.
Acomb then beat Cleckheaton 3-2 – coming from 2-1 down.
Acomb attacked constantly for the first ten minutes and the opening goal eventually came from sharpshooter Woods.
However, Cleckheaton levelled before half-time and they went ahead from a short corner as Acomb struggled to cope with, or keep their cool in the face of, the West Yorkshire side’s brute force.
Acomb had not been behind for some time but no heads dropped.
They drove harder to get back into the game and did so as Woods equalised with a straight strike from a short corner.
As the clock ticked down, Jane Elsworth and Rachel Roberton worked the ball through the middle to Emily Watson, who struck the winner and confirm her player-of-the-match award.
