UPDATED: NIGEL WORTHINGTON has today been appointed as the new manager of York City.
The Minstermen board moved for Worthington after the dismissal of Gary Mills in the wake of Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Bradford City.
Former Leeds United full-back Worthington takes over with City in 18th place in the npower League Two table, four points above the drop zone.
The first game in charge for Worthington, who was Northern Ireland boss from 2007 to 2011, will be Saturday’s trip to basement side AFC Wimbledon.
A statement from the City board said: “The decision to appoint Nigel was based on his solid Football League experience, his strong coaching ability and his extensive knowledge of players throughout the leagues.
“The York City board of directors welcomes Nigel Worthington to the club and looks forward to working with him.”
Worthington, who had a spell at Leicester City as caretaker manager in 2007, was in charge of Norwich City from 2000 to 2006, guiding the club into the Premier League in the 2003/4 season.
Following the departure of Mills, the club confirmed the exit of coaches Des Lyttle and Paul Musselwhite, while assistant manager Darron Gee has now also left.
