SKIPPER Chris Smith scored the winner as York City beat Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 to stave off the threat of relegation from League Two.
The centre-back swept in the winner from eight yards after Michael Ingham's long punt forward from a free-kick in the 67th minute.
The Daggers had a host of chances in a scrappy final game at Victoria Park, but the Minstermen backline managed to emerge with a cleansheet.
City climbed up the table to 17th, while Dagenham survived on goal difference after Barnet lost 2-0 at Northampton and were relegated with Aldershot.
The victory means Nigel Worthington has steered the side to safety on the back of an six-match unbeaten run, taking 14 points in that period.
