SCUNTHORPE United boss Nigel Adkins says he won't pay "stupid money" to prize leading Conference striker Clayton Donaldson away from York City.
Adkins is the latest manager to have a bid rejected at KitKat Crescent, with Peterborough and Accrington Stanley also failing to land the 20-goal marksman.
As reported in The Press yesterday, Adkins revealed Scunthorpe's bid for Donaldson had been "substantial" and "rejected" but fell short of the £500,000 price tag City's board say will be needed if the sought-after striker is to be sold before next Wednesday's transfer deadline.
"We have identified him as a good player and would like to bring him in," Adkins said. "We have watched him several times this season and he is someone we noticed last year as well.
"But we will not offer stupid money, especially for a player who is out of contract in the summer. We have been targeting several players, Donaldson is not the only one, and have missed out on a couple who have gone to other clubs for transfer fees."
- City's scheduled first round North Riding Senior Cup clash with derby rivals Scarborough at the McCain Stadium last night was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
