Prolific opener Adam Lyth completed his sixth championship century of the summer to help Yorkshire move a step closer towards their first championship since 2001 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Yorkshire entered their title-deciding game leading division one by 26 points from Nottinghamshire, knowing they would be crowned champions if their opponents fail to claim three more points than them during the four days.
But nerves were non-existant with Yorkshire dominating the opening day with Lyth’s unbeaten 111 helping them reach 229 for one at tea after Joe Root, captaining the side in the absence of the suspended Andrew Gale, won the toss and decided to bat first on a good batting wicket.
Lyth was given a reprieve off the second ball of the match, edging Luke Fletcher behind before he had scored only for Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper and captain Chris Read to fumble the catch.
It was one of three costly catches missed before lunch with Lyth forging a 176-run opening stand with Alex Lees, who was dropped twice before the interval by Rikki Wessels at short leg off Gary Keedy.
Lees fell mid-way through the afternoon session, pushing forward defensively only for Wessels to take a superb diving catch to his right at short leg for 86 after hitting 13 fours and a six, but Lyth continued to hit 14 fours in his unbeaten hundred.
