YORK City have completed the signing of former Braintree Town defender Matt Fry.
The 25-year-old out-of-contract centre-back, who helped Braintree to the National League play-offs this year, put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Bootham Crescent this afternoon, becoming boss Jackie McNamara’s second signing of the day following the arrival of Joshua Robinson.
Fry began his youth career with Gravesend & Northfleet before moving to Premier League side West Ham United at the age of 11 and signing professional terms in June 2009.
During his time at Upton Park, the 6ft 1in centre-half enjoyed two loan spells in the Football League as he made his senior debut in October 2009 for Gillingham, the first of 13 appearances for the Kent club, before the following season appearing 32 times for Charlton Athletic.
His first-team experience teed up a move to Bradford City following his release from the Hammers in early 2012.
After a short stint with the Bantams, he switched to Isthmian League side Concord Rangers and helped the club win promotion to National League South via the play-offs.
A 16-game stint with former National League outfit Dartford followed in 2013 before Fry took in short spells with Eastleigh and old side Concord during 2014/15.
In the summer of 2015, the defender penned a one-year contract with part-time outfit Braintree Town and helped the Essex club to the National League play-offs courtesy of 22 clean sheets, only to fall short to eventual winners Grimsby Town in the semi-finals.
