FAMILY rivalry is alive and well in the Young household as father and son Stuart and Luke return from an international competition - having competed for different countries.

Stuart and Luke, based near Pocklington, were competing for Scotland and England, respectively, at the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association Olympic Skeet Home International at Doveridge in Derbyshire.

Luke, though just 22 years old to his father’s 62, is the more experienced of the pair, and he finished as the ninth-best shooter overall, his 91 points helping his team to take the top prize.

The East Yorkshire hot shot has been shooting Olympic skeet as a junior for the last six years. This was his first senior event.

He has represented England and Great Britain on on a number of occasions, including making a Junior World Cup final in Australia, earning three England caps for home internationals and collecting a further cap for the European Commonwealth Games. In the latter, he won an individual silver, as well as silver in the pairs.

His first senior year, due to be 2020, was put paid to by Covid. The shooting calendar is getting back on track this year, and following selection for the Home International, Luke has earned himself another cap.

Interestingly, dad Stuart has taken to shooting after years of accompanying Luke to events - and he earned a place in the Scotland team as a veteran for the competition. Stuart qualifies for the Scotland team through his Scottish grandparents.

Stuart bagged himself 35 points on Saturday as his veterans team finished third.

The Home International was contested by England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Competitions take place all over the country, though the pair’s main training ground is closer to home, in East Yorkshire. Luke also travels to Derbyshire to train with coach Clive Bramley, a World Cup gold medalist.
