CREWE Alexandra director of football Dario Gradi ran the rule over York City winger Martyn Woolford on Saturday.
Gradi, who has watched Woolford previously this season, was among the crowd during the 3-2 home defeat to Woking.
Should the League One strugglers target a summer swoop for the wide man, then they would need to stump up a transfer fee with Woolford contracted at KitKat Crescent until the summer of 2009.
But City boss Colin Walker felt Woolford, who played in a roving attacking midfield role on Saturday, did not do himself any justice.
Walker said: "Martyn Woolford got in some fantastic positions during the first half, but gave the ball away. I don't want to ridicule him because he's had a fantastic season for us, but he was getting in the same areas where he did ever so well against Stafford on Tuesday and didn't seem to grasp it."
