YORK City boss Colin Walker has revealed he is still tracking summer transfer target Luke Beckett.
League One outfit Huddersfield, however, are reluctant to sanction a loan move for the 31-year-old former Stockport and Sheffield United striker. Beckett has only been given 15 minutes of League One action this season during the 1-1 opening day draw with Stockport but has been an unused substitute in four other matches.
City manager Walker watched him in action against Scunthorpe reserves last week and admitted he retains an interest in the forward.
Walker said: “I probably speak to Luke once or twice a week and saw him play but then get brought off against Scunthorpe. He’s on the bench most of the time so he’s been involved. Huddersfield have got plenty of players, but their policy at the moment is not to let any out. Luke is obviously somebody I pencilled in over the summer and it’s a case of watch this space.”
But, unless Beckett becomes available, Walker admitted that the loan capture of Rotherham midfielder Peter Holmes will represent an end to his immediate transfer activity.
He said: “We would have to get some out before we brought more in and I don’t want too many players at the club. We’ve also got the likes of Liam Shepherd, Andy McWilliams and Adam Boyes knocking on the door and getting to a stage where they might have to be thrown in because they are doing really well.”
Walker has, however, agreed a new contract with centre-back Danny Parslow that will keep him at KitKat Crescent until the summer of 2010.
About that decision, he said: “Danny wanted a chat about his future in the close season because he left his home in Cardiff and, since signing his first contract, he’s found York a difficult place to afford to live in. I told him if he showed me the same response at the start of this season as he did last then we would talk about something else.
“We’ve reached an agreement where all parties are happy. If somebody’s doing well then they need rewarding and, from the club’s point of view, you also need protection from the Bosman ruling.”
Captain Manny Panther is believed to have become unsettled when he was free to talk to other clubs in the New Year under the Bosman regulations and, while Walker is not currently in contract negotiations with other members of his squad, he added: “If somebody pops up in the next ten or so games that we might think we need to get sorted, we will do.”
