SENT-OFF striker Richard Brodie will be disciplined by York City following a disastrous substitute appearance during last night’s 3-1 defeat at Wrexham.
Brodie was only on the pitch for seven minutes at the Racecourse Ground, but was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away in dissent and then given his marching orders for a lunging challenge on full-back Carl Tremarco.
The Minstermen trailed 1-0 at the time, with Craig Farrell having squandered a chance to open the scoring when his 60th-minute penalty was saved.
Although Ben Wilkinson reduced the deficit to 2-1 with his first goal for the club, Colin Walker’s ten men succumbed to a third defeat of the season.
About Brodie’s behaviour, the City boss said: “He’s young and impetuous and, unfortunately, everything’s going wrong for him at the moment. He’s got to sit down and think that he’s let the team down. That thought is worse than anything I can say to him, but the club has a policy and the matter will be dealt with internally.”
Walker was less critical of Farrell’s failure to convert from the spot, adding: “He was big enough to stick his hand up to take it and there weren’t too many more stepping forward. He could have scored it, but he knows he’s missed a penalty. Simon Russell should have walked off the pitch with a hat-trick as well.
“At least we scored a good goal bursting from midfield and created several other chances, but failed to put them away.”
Walker added that he felt that his side’s performance was “outstanding” other than the “silly individual mistakes”.
He said: “I don’t think we have created as many chances in one game this season and I thought the players were fantastic and really gave it a go. We took the game to them and were absolutely top class.
“The team were outstanding and I couldn’t really say anything to them at the end. It was just silly, individual mistakes, a missed penalty and a sending off. Need I go on?
“We got beaten 3-1 but I’m dead proud of the players. The game should have been over before they scored their first goal.
“I’m big and ugly enough to take things on the chin, but not many teams will come to Wrexham and play like that although I know that doesn’t matter because we lost.”
On-loan Rotherham midfielder Peter Holmes missed the game with a hip injury and is doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Woking.
City’s directors will hold a board meeting tomorrow to discuss new stadium developments.
Walker’s position at the club will not be on the agenda, despite inevitable speculation after a run of one win from 12 games.
