DANGERMAN striker Steve Morison killed York City's hopes of Wembley glory by scoring one goal and setting up an injury-time second in the FA Trophy final.
Stevenage Borough, knocked out of the Blue Square Premier promotion play-offs in cruel fashion on Monday, took consolation by lifting the FA Trophy in front of 27,000 at the home of English football.
Captain Morison got the all-important first goal - after 68 minutes, as City, big underdogs going into the game, were largely outplayed.
His quick-thinking from a throw-in in the fourth minute of stoppage time then saw Lee Boylan seal the win.
The Minstermen were second best but had had a great chance after only 32 seconds.
Daniel McBreen did well to get the ball out to strike partner Richard Brodie on the right, and although he rather scuffed his cross, the ball rolled perfectly back to the Australian 12 yards out - but he too scuffed his shot and it trickled wide of the left-hand post.
The first half continued to be open, with chances on goal coming at regular intervals - though mainly at the City end.
City right-back Ben Purkiss won an important header in his own area, before Boro midfielder Darren Murphy found room to turn and shoot in the box, the effort going straight at keeper Michael Ingham.
City centre-backs David McGurk and Daniel Parslow also made telling sliding tackles, with City's riposte being a 25-yard effort from left-back Shaun Pejic, on 13 minutes, which flew three yards wide.
Back at the other end, Peter Vicenti had a good shooting chance from 15 yards, to the left of the sticks, but, rather than curl the ball into the far corner, he blazed over wildly. Then Ingham had to come out to smother the ball as Boro tried to get goal-side of the defence.
Boro were clearly in the ascendancy and should have taken the lead in the 21st minute when Morison rode a challenge by Parslow to bear down on Ingham, but the finish was poor and was going wide before being cleared by the covering Pejic.
Bostwick saw a long-range effort go wide and Pejic had to block a shot from inside the area by Andy Drury, who also fired a 25-yard attempt over.
City's back four had far too much to do, with little protection from the midfield and even less retention of possesson, with no width and a lack of options on the few occasions York did have the ball.
Vicenti headed over a Drury cross before York finally had a glimpse of goal at the other end, Rusk volleying high and wide after the ball dropped to him 25 yards out.
Ingham saved from Morison from a tight angle after the striker beat Parslow for pace down the inside right, before York had their first shot on target on 34 minutes, though Brodie's attempt from outside the area did not trouble keeper Chris Day.
Boro almost scored at the other end immediately after, as Boylan headed Ronny Henry's cross just past the left-hand post.
Drury curled another effort just wide as Boro again got into the danger zone after more good work from Henry down the right.
City fans had hitherto amused themselves with a Mexican wave and with continental-style flares before they finally rose to their feet for football reasons, six minutes before half-time.
Rusk chipped the ball forward and left-winger Adam Boyes beat Henry for pace down centrefield only to fire straight at Day, who gathered the ball at the second attempt.
Henry looked better going forward and from another of his crosses, Vincenti headed over after rising above Purkiss.
City had been outclassed throughout the half but had the last chance before the interval in stoppage-time - two chances to be exact.
A Purkiss free-kick into the box fell to Mark Greaves 12 yards out. The central midfielder's first effort, which was going just wide, was inadvertantly blocked in a crowded area by team-mate McGurk, and his second, after the ball rebounded back to him, was blazed over.
Although second best, those chances showed the Minstermen were in the game and could always nick a goal.
Boro nearly did just that as the second half began like the first with a good chance. Boylan controlled the ball with his chest in the area and, as City's defenders claimed for handball, fired wide.
City had a bigger shout for handball at the other end minutes later. Boyes, rather than pull the trigger, laid the ball to Brodie, whose effort struck Bostwick on the elbow, but the penalty appeals were waved away, as referee Michael Jones deemed the defender had little chance to get his arm away.
Boyes then found space down the left but, with options around him, cut inside and rolled a poor shot wide of the far post.
City were getting more into the game and had their first corner on 62 minutes. It came when Purkiss' free-kick was deflected wide by the wall - though Purkiss should have laid the ball right to Brodie who, bizarrely, was left in acres of space inside the area.
However, Boro still looked dangerous, as Vincenti saw a 28-yard piledriver tipped round the post by Ingham, while Boylan's cross from the byline was cleared away by McGurk.
This led to the corner from which Morison scored.
Mark Roberts won the header and the striker reacted far quicker than the defenders and stabbed the loose ball home.
City sub Onome Sodje had a hopeful long-ranger, McGurk a weak header goalwards and Roberts headed clear a dangerous Purkiss cross, but it should have been 2-0 when, in between times, Vincenti headed another Henry cross wide.
Brodie saw a free kick go over but, at the other end, Parslow nearly headed into his own goal when diving to clear a Drury cross.
City's last chance came in the second minute of injury time. Drury fouled City sub Andrew McWilliams 25 yards out to the left of the 'D', but Purkiss' curling free kick went harmlessly wide, and Boylan wrapped up the result with almost the last kick of the game after being left alone in the box.
