YORK has received another major Olympic Games boost.
The Guinea-Bissau Olympic Committee has chosen the city for its training in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympiad.
The decision follows that in mid-summer when Olympic athletes from Gambia confirmed they would be preparing for the Games in York.
George Gomez, the executive secretary of ZANOCA Zone II is currently visiting York to tour facilities on offer and sign a memorandum of understanding with Coun Nigel Ayre, the Liberal Democrat executive member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion.
Said Coun Ayre, who hoped the visit of President Viegas would encourage other nations to opt for York for their Olympic training: “York already has some excellent sporting facilities and work is under way to bring even more top-class facilities to the city.
“As well as being head of the Guinea-Bissau Olympic Committee, President Viegas is head of ZANOCA Zone II, which represents the Olympic Committees of seven West African countries.”
