CARETAKER chief Andy Porter would like the York City manager’s job on a permanent basis.
Porter did his chances of landing the role no harm at all with a 3-1 victory at Tamworth on Saturday, following goals from Michael Rankine, Alex Lawless and Jamal Fyfield.
His temporary tenure is due to end after tonight’s home match with Darlington and, having been the departed Martin Foyle’s assistant, Porter is hoping the board will opt for continuity when determining his successor.
The ex-Port Vale midfielder said: “Yes, I would like the job. I have had a chat with the chairman and I’ve got two games to have a look at it. It has all come as a shock and I’m disappointed to lose a good friend and great colleague, who has done a tremendous job for the club. Me and Martin are very close and have done a lot of things here together and, for me, it would be just a matter of moving up to the next spot. I would bring nothing different to Martin.
“We have been working together for 15 years. We have the same morals and tactics and the team was Martin’s and mine.”
Porter added he was unaware of Foyle’s reasons for stepping down from the helm at Bootham Crescent and could not shed any light on whether reports that his old friend will be interviewed for the manager’s job at Altrincham this week were true. He did, however, generously share credit for Saturday’s victory with Foyle.
Four changes were made from the side that started Tuesday’s 5-0 mauling at Mansfield with Fyfield, Danny Racchi, Michael Gash and Greg Young named in the first XI while David McDermott and the suspended Jonathan Smith were left behind and Peter Till and Leon Constantine dropped to the bench.
Porter added: “Martin had a great input into this team. He wanted to put Youngy in and give Jamal a chance.”
Ex-Altrincham defender Young was substituted on 69 minutes after needing five stitches to his head but is expected to be available against Darlington.
City will be without the suspended Lawless after he was shown his fifth yellow card of the season.
Short-term signing Dave Dowson, a former Sunderland reserve-team striker, will be hoping to be involved having made his debut as an 85th-minute sub.
