So what if Andy Campbell isn't on his way to KitKat Crescent York City showed last night they have firepower to spare in a 2-0 friendly win over Leeds United Reserves.
Minstermen boss Billy McEwan asked the ex-Middlesbrough man to call him over the weekend to discuss York City possibilities but Campbell stood him up in favour of Halifax Town less than 24 hours later.
But last night's display from his current hitmen meant McEwan was the one smiling.
The signs are already sparking of an electric front pairing in Craig Farrell and Clayton Donaldson, and Steve Bowey and Mark Convery have creativity by the bucket-load much like the mopped up rainwater prior to the delayed kick-off.
The referee came close to calling the whole thing off 45 minutes before kick-off with the ball splashing to a glue-like halt in standing water.
But the Minstermen rewarded the hard work pitched in by ground-staff from City and Leeds with one-touch flashes that not so much defied the weather as dipped a toe in a sea of exhibition football.
One zig-zagged sequence that featured a Ronaldo-like back of the foot spin from Donaldson moved the York contingent of the 1,511 crowd to loud murmurs of approval coupled with applause.
Two great headers by James Dudgeon and Bowey gave Donaldson the half-yard he needed to challenge one-time York trialist Mark Wilberforce to a duel, stepping over the ball twice before slotting it away behind the sprawled out 'keeper.
Right-back Darren Craddock struck two minutes into the second half after touching the ball inside two defenders on the by-line and unleashing a shot into the top far corner.
Donaldson looked brimful of the kind of confidence that spawns top scorers although tragically short of the finishing as he sliced shots wide, mis-hit one-on-ones and even handled en route to a Farrell goal.
But goals as requested by McEwan prior to the game were there. As was the crucial big performance.
He said: "I thought that was a very, very good performance where we created lots of chances against a young Leeds team.
"We got a bit ragged and lost our shape a wee bit in the second half but I was pleased with it.
"We played some superb football. I was absolutely delighted with some of the stuff we played.
"I was delighted with a lot of the approach work although I was just a bit disappointed with the finishing."
Not so good was the early withdrawal of Neal Bishop due to a knock and Nathan Peat due to another rashly received booking.
