TWO new faces have been added to the York City squad as they seek to stretch their winning run to three games at home to AFC Telford United today.
Pacey winger Danny Pilkington, has been signed on a non-contract basis and immediately goes into the squad to tackle the Bucks as does 16-year-old youth team striker Rob Moncur.
The 21-year-old Pilkington earned the nod of City boss Gary Mills after spending the past week on trial with the Minstermen.
Mills told The Press: “I’m delighted to have signed him. He’s been training with us this week and he is a welcome addition to the squad.
“He is someone who can give us something as he is quick, has two good feet and can play left or right wing.
“He is somebody who I feel can come straight into the style of game that we like to play.”
The City manager explained that with winger David McDermott still injured, front-man Liam Henderson also sitting out today’s game with a knock, and three-goal hit-man Jason Walker waiting to see if he can shake off a knee injury suffered in the midweek triumph at home to his former club Barrow, Pilkington’s capture on non-contract terms was a timely signing.
Pilkington started his Football League career with his hometown club Stockport County, making 37 appearances, with one goal scored, in three years at Edgeley Park.
However, he was released in January since when he has had trial spells at Chesterfield, Chester and Accrington Stanley before shipping up on trial at Bootham Crescent this week.
His brother, Anthony, also a winger who started out at Stockport, made a big-money move from npower League One outfit Huddersfield Town to Premier League new boys Norwich City.
Of youth player Moncur’s elevation to the senior ranks for today’s Telford tussle, Mills said the North-East-born forward had excelled during training with the first-team over the past week.
“He is a young lad who has done well in training and has taken my eye a little bit this week,” said the Minstermen leader. “It’s good to have a 16-year-old in with the seniors and he could possibly be a good player for us. He has deserved to be added to the squad.”
The teenage Moncur is the grandson of Bobby Moncur, the Newcastle United legend and former Scotland international defender and captain.
