THE City of York Special Olympics Committee have taken the plunge with a swimming initiative.
They have teamed up with The Mount School and swimming club Team Jorvik to create opportunities for adults and children with learning disabilities to take up a new sport and represent the city.
Sessions started in May and four athletes – Charlie Pickering, Jake Vickers, Cameron Long and Edward Wade – claimed four gold and three silver medals between them at a recent event in Blythe.
Beginners, intermediate and established swimmers can join the action at The Mount on Sundays, between 11am and 1pm.
Meanwhile, the David Lloyd gym in Hull Road hosted an open event to which more than 50 athletes and potential new participants enjoyed taster sessions in a range of sports including football, golf, athletics, boccia, bowls, tennis and table tennis.
Details of all the sports on offer can be found by visiting the website www.specialolympicscityofyork.org or by phoning Rob Tyas on 01904 553440.
The Committee’s annual general meeting will be held at York RI in New Lane on Monday, November 7, at 6.30pm.
