York City boss Billy McEwan has hit out at Clayton Donaldson's selfishness in front of goal saying it cost them the game at Oxford United.
The Minstermen lost 2-0 at unbeaten Nationwide Conference leaders Oxford on Saturday despite having more chances than the Us.
City had 12 shots in total - one more than Oxford - and had five on target to United's six. But it was the home side that made them count, leaving McEwan once again ruing the missed opportunities - especially after Donaldson got greedy.
He said: "Clayton Donaldson had some great chances but he wasted them.
"There was one up there where we had two men over and he should have squared it - that was selfish play and that's unacceptable.
"You have got to play for the team. Whether he didn't see them or not, he had his eyes on one thing and that was the goal. He's got to get his head up and play for the team."
The missed opportunities were made harder to swallow by the fact that two defensive errors paved the way for both of United's strikes.
The first came after a run from midfield was missed and the defenders were dragged out of position, and the second came after Danny Parslow was wrong-footed.
Said McEwan: "If you're going to give goals like that away, you need to put them in at the other end.
"We created the chances as we did and in the first half we played very well - we played some good football - but we never put them in. Then we gave them a goal.
"I thought first half we played very, very well at a tough venue. We created three great situations to score and didn't take the chances which we lived to regret.
"It's frustrating but this is a team I'm building and it's still early days.
"I think that might be the youngest team in the Conference - it's certainly got the youngest back four and I think that showed a bit in the second half."
David McGurk and Manny Panther returned to the starting line-up with James Dudgeon still sidelined by illness and Martyn Woolford benched in a tactical move to strengthen the midfield.
There is no news yet on whether Dudgeon will be fit enough for tomorrow night's trip to Northwich Victoria.
Whichever squad travels to Cheshire, one thing will be on McEwan's mind.
"Northwich will be a tough side," added the manager. "And they will cause us problems, so we have got to eradicate the basic mistakes."
