A taste of the Caribbean graced the latest event to mark the York and District Senior Cricket League’s centenary celebrations.
The event was commemorated by a special match between a Caribbean Select XI and YDSCL League XI at Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club and proved a competitive and even tussle.
Good performances from Leeward Islands and St Kitts’ ace Steve Liburd, who hammered a whopping 103 not out, and a solid 51 from ex-Dunnington player Hamed Khan decorated the Select XI innings of 249-5 off 40 overs.
But Simon Brown’s excellent bowling was to the fore.
He took three very important wickets, one of which was Collis King, the former big-hitting West Indies player and ex-Worcestershire first-teamer, plus the scalp of former West Indies ‘B’ team player Elsroy Powell.
The YDSCL team fought back but were restricted by the penetrative attack of Leeward Islands all-rounder Tashmeil Mills, who bagged 2-25 from his eight overs and Kelvin Patterson, another former Dunnington player, with a haul of 2-35.
Only a late flurry from Sessay’s Stuart Peirse – he struck an unbeaten 29 – made inroads as the York total ended on 170-7.
