MELBOURNE completed the first leg of what they hope will be a silverware double by winning the Scothern Construction Cup.

The runaway HPH York Vale League division three leaders beat North Duffield by six wickets in a high-class final at Hemingbrough.

Duffield, who also harbour promotion hopes to division two, made 164-5 from their 40 overs. Trevor Britain was still at the crease on 47 at the close after Paul Pemberton (36) and Steve Miller (31) made contributions.

Melbourne’s bowlers kept it tight, notably skipper Harry Collins, who had figures of 10-4-30-2.

His side were wobbling a bit at 113-4 when opener Oliver Steels was dismissed for a patient 54 in the 31st over, but Collins (43no) and Dave Coe (35no) went on the attack to get the remaining 54 runs.

Collins struck the winning boundary with nine balls remaining and received the trophy from ten-year-old Guy Scothern, grandson of sponsor Ian Scothern.

There are two more Vale finals on Sunday – the Guy Mitchell Cup at Pocklington where Hemingbrough face Kelfield and the President’s Cup at Selby where Hemingbrough II take on Askham Bryan II.
