David O’Meara, whose stablestar Penitent runs in the prestigious Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin this weekend, heads to Musselburgh tomorrow with excellent prospects of a double.
The North Yorkshire trainer saddles recent winners Frontier Fighter and Gandalak and both horses look to have outstanding chances.
Frontier Fighter is already a four-time winner this year. Three of those successes were gained on the all-weather, but he proved at Pontefract last week that he is capable of producing a similar level of ability on turf.
He carries a 6lb penalty for that victory, which takes him up to top-weight in the featured Weatherbys Bank Handicap. Danny Tudhope again has the mount.
Tudhope will also be aboard Gandalak in the Core (Oil And Gas) Ltd Handicap.
The four-year-old won in some style at Newcastle last weekend over six furlongs and stayed on so strongly to the line that this extra furlong should not cause him any worries. He is napped to follow up under a 6lb penalty.
Cracking Choice can make it third-time-lucky in the opening Brewin Dolphin Handicap.
The three-year-old has finished runner-up in both his outings at Newcastle this season and was beaten only a whisker on his latest start. This fast course should play to the strengths of this speedy sort.
The Baillie Gifford Maiden Stakes promises to be a decent contest and it remains to be seen if any of the newcomers prove to be useful. On form already achieved, Withernsea makes appeal.
Tony Hamilton’s mount finished fourth at Ripon on his debut, shaping well after a tardy start and not appearing to handle the undulating course. He should be wiser this time.
The Bruce Stevenson Insurance Brokers Handicap over one mile and six furlongs is the longest race on the card and it would be no surprise to see La Bacouetteuse lift the spoils for trainer Iain Jardine.
The eight-year-old won this contest 12 months ago in the hands of Malton jockey David Allan, who takes the mount again.
At Chepstow, Tafawuk is selected to defy a 6lb penalty in the opening Bath Marquees Handicap.
Roger Varian’s four-year-old won tidily at Leicester earlier this week and looks in excellent heart to defy a 6lb penalty.
Varian can also score with Naalatt, a tough and consistent three-year-old, in the Brewin Dolphin Handicap.
David Lanigan has an interesting horse in Tinghir, who contests the Liswerry And Nash Consititutional Club Maiden Stakes.
A creditable second in his only outing as a juvenile at Kempton, Tinghir finished fifth in a ten-runner maiden at Newmarket last month on his reappearance. He looks capable of progression as he gains in experience.
Also worth noting are Astra Hall (2.50), who looks capable of paying her way this season, and Baltic Gin (4.50), who represents trainer Malcolm Saunders, who does particularly well with his sprinters.
