MUNSEF looks set to be one of the leading players in today’s Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup at York.

The eight-year-old is rated 110 on official figures – the highest of any of the 11 runners for the one-mile, six-furlong Listed contest.

Trained by Ian Williams, he made his seasonal bow a fortnight ago in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester where he was a creditable third of six to Harbinger.

That was his first outing since last November’s Emirates Melbourne Cup in which he was only beaten six and a half lengths, finishing 12th overall.

Williams said: “We were delighted with Munsef’s comeback race at Chester after he had been out in Australia. He was in the southern hemisphere for quite a while and it took him a long time to acclimatise when he got back.

“But he has come in his coat now which he hadn’t at Chester and is in good form with the benefit of a run under his belt.

“At York, he will appreciate the ground, as he will the trip. He has a lot going for him in what is quite an open and competitive event.”

Munsef has significant winning form at York as he landed the King George V heritage handicap in 2005, the year in which Royal Ascot was staged on Knavesmire.

The only other horse in the field to win on the track is the evergreen Caracciola, who actually landed last year’s renewal of the Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup by a short head.

Now 13, the Nicky Henderson trained veteran is poised for his first run since finishing fourth in the Goodwood Cup last July. Success would see him extend his own record as the oldest winner of a Listed contest.

Other notables in the £40,000 contest are Godolphin trio Age Of Reason, Highland Glen and Mojave Moon. The first two named are trained by Saeed Bin Suroor and both won at the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

Frankie Dettori looks set to partner Age of Reason in the contest.
