Malton jockey Paul Hanagan takes in Kempton tomorrow night in his continuing quest to add to his bumper tally of winners this season.

With the championship title now looking very much in his grasp with a double-figure lead over Richard Hughes, who is suspended until Saturday, Hanagan is in a wonderful position as the final lap of the campaign approaches.

He is also buoyed by a booking from Newmarket trainer Ed Dunlop to ride the unbeaten Native Khan in Saturday’s Group 1 Racing Post Trophy.

His best chance of a winner at Kempton promises to be Elmfield Giant in the Bet Multiples – Betdaq Handicap over ten furlongs.

Trained by Richard Fahey, who has provided Hanagan with more than 90 winners in his championship season, Elmfield Giant ran a blinder switched to an all-weather surface at Wolverhampton on his latest start.

In finishing third, he went down by only half a length.

Tomorrow’s slightly longer trip should play to his strengths and the Malton gelding could well add to Hanagan’s tally under the Kempton floodlights.

Three-time champion jockey Ryan Moore should also figure among the winners.

He has good prospects on Sir Michael Stoute’s pair, Mascarene (7.10) and Modun (8.10).

The latter, a son of King’s Best, has a profile of one run and one win, which came at Folkestone a month ago. He is now into handicap company for the first time and, while he lacks the experience of his rivals, he may prove a cut above them in terms of natural ability.

Mascarene is overdue a winning turn. The three-year-old has made the frame in all her four starts and has finished second at Bath and Epsom on her latest two outings. Provided she copes with this switch to racing on sand, she should make a bold bid.

On the turf at Brighton, the nap vote is awarded to Cathcart Castle in the Britvic Soft Drinks Nursery.

Trained by Mick Channon and the mount of Andrew Heffernan, Cathcart Castle has yet to get his head in front in eight races.

Despite that uninspiring record, he has run some good races in defeat, not least at Kempton last time out when he appreciated the step back up to seven furlongs to be beaten only two lengths into fifth place.

He promises to go well at a nice price in this wide open contest.

Henry Cecil and Tom Queally, who bagged a notable Group 1 double at Newmarket last Saturday, can win the European Breeders’ Fund Maiden Stakes with Tiger Webb.

The Hurricane Run colt has finished second in all his three starts to date and went down in a photo-finish to Pink Diva at Pontefract on his latest outing. He deserves a winning turn.

Also worth noting are the speedy Desperate Dan (2.00) and prolific winner Timocracy (4.40).
