With Paul Hanagan, the newly-crowned Flat jockeys’ champion, enjoying a well-earned break, Tom Eaves can capitalise on his absence by completing a Lingfield double tomorrow – provided the meeting passes a course inspection planned for 3pm today.

Norton-based Eaves has picked up a couple of useful mounts from Richard Fahey’s Malton yard, which is currently without the services of its number one jockey, Hanagan, who left on Wednesday for a fortnight’s family holiday in the sunshine of Mauritius.

The first of the Fahey runners, Podgies Boy, winner of his last two starts, is napped to complete a hat-trick in the totetrifecta Flexi Betting Nursery over seven furlongs.

Although it was only a seller the juvenile won at Southwell to break his duck, he has since followed up in handicap company over this course and distance.

He has been raised 7lb for that success and while that leap up the ratings will undoubtedly make life tougher for him tomorrow, Podgies Boy is a horse in form and he can carry Eaves to victory.

Sioux Rising provides Eaves and Fahey with good prospects of a double in the Dry Hill Handicap over six furlongs.

She has had just one race on an artificial surface, at Wolverhampton ten days ago, when she shaped well, staying on nicely to be nearest at the finish in the race won by Piscean.

She should be more familiar with what is required on Polytrack this time around and it would be no surprise to see this speedy four-year-old come out on top.

Hanagan, incidentally, will no soooner return from his holiday than he will have his championship trophy re-presented to him at Anfield, home to his beloved Liverpool FC, in front of the famous Kop.

And, just 24 hours later, he will be a guest at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Birmingham, for which legendary jumps colleague Tony McCoy is favourite to become the first-ever jockey to clinch the Sports Personality of the Year award.

Join Up, who is nothing if not consistent, is the selection in the toteexacta Flexi Betting Apprentice Handicap.

Ross Atkinson takes the mount on Mark Brisbourne’s gelding, who has finished out of the frame only once in his last six outings and who finished a creditable second at Wolverhampton on his latest start.

Buddy Miracle (12.30), runner-up in his last two outings at Kempton, switches to Lingfield to try to make it third time lucky in the modest maiden race that opens the card, while Bidruma (3.30), a recent Kempton winner, is fancied to follow up for trainer Mike Murphy in the concluding contest.

• Yesterday’s National Hunt meeting at Exeter that was called off due to a frozen track has been rescheduled for tomorrow, with course chiefs confident it will beat the weather and go ahead.
