Martin Lane, whose career reached overdrive after a notable victory at York last summer, can figure on the scoresheet at Wolverhampton tomorrow evening.

The talented Irishman, who moved from Karl Burke’s Middleham yard to David Simcock’s Newmarket establishment towards the end of 2009, became last year’s champion apprentice after his opportunities considerably increased on the back of his big-race success aboard the Michael Bell-trained Wigmore Hall in the John Smith’s Cup on Knavesmire in July.

Lane has turned down the chance to ride in Dubai this winter to concentrate on establishing himself in Britain as a fully-fledged jockey and Dare It And Smile is napped to do her bit to help his cause by carrying him to victory in the Hotel & Conferencing At Wolverhampton Maiden Stakes.

Trained by Simcock, the three-year-old has shown promise in both her outings to date, finishing fourth at Brighton on her debut and runner-up at Lingfield on her first taste of an all-weather surface.

She is no star, but she will not need to be to win this modest affair for Lane, who looks destined to enjoy a profitable campaign.

Kevin Ryan and Phil Makin also look a partnership set to flourish in 2011 and the duo can win the bluesq.com Handicap with Breathless Kiss.

A winner last time out at Kempton under Kieren Fallon, who brought her from last to first, Breathless Kiss is likely to receive similar patient handling from Thirsk-based Makin, who was snapped up at the end of the turf season by Ryan to be number one jockey at his powerful Hambleton yard. The pair have made a bright start to their association and Breathless Kiss is fancied to provide them with another winner.

Barry McHugh has made a flying start to the year with doubles at Southwell on successive days earlier this week.

The Norton-based rider can add to his tally on Sloop Johnb (4.10) in the opening claiming race. Richard Fahey’s gelding has been running well enough in recent weeks to suggest he can play a hand in this five furlong dash.

Recent Lingfield winner Lord Lansing (5.10), and the in-form Zafeen’s Pearl (7.10), winner of her last two races, are two others to consider at this twilight meeting.

Sir Mark Prescott is striking while the iron is hot with Luck Of The Draw, who is set to turn out at Lingfield tomorrow in a bid to complete a quick-fire hat-trick.

The gelding has rattled up a brace of wins at Southwell in the last week and will surely take plenty of beating in the Eden Brook Handicap, which offers this progressive four-year-old an excellent chance of recording another win before the handicapper gets to grips with him.

You’relikemefrank won well over this course and distance last week and a 6lb penalty may not be enough to halt John Balding’s sprinter in the Dormansland Handicap.

Luke Morris has the ride on the gelding, who won with more in hand than his two lengths margin might suggest on his latest outing.
