Time may be running out for Sutton Veny to get his head in front this season, but the five-year-old is fancied to find opportunity knocking in Sussex tomorrow.
Trained by Jeremy Gask, Sutton Veny runs in the Goodwood Aero Club Handicap over six furlongs and is napped to show his rivals a clean pair of heels.
A creditable runner-up at Ascot two starts ago, the gelding has since finished a good fourth at Leicester.
A five-times winner in his career, Sutton Veny is taken to rediscover the winning thread.
Richard Hannon, who has had more winners than any other trainer in Britain this season, and who has also won more prize money, is finishing the campaign in fine style.
Dixie’s Dream and Cristal Gem could be two more for the Marlborough maestro.
Dixie’s Dream, a Brighton winner two starts back, finished second at Nottingham last time.
She has had a couple of months break since then, but the European Breeders’ Fund Nursery looks a good opportunity for her to restart her career in the best possible manner.
Cristal Gem had clearly been doing everything right at home in advance of her debut at Lingfield in the spring.
She was sent off favourite to make a winning start, but had to settle for second spot in maiden company.
That was more than four months ago, so perhaps Cristal Gem had problems after that race.
She’s back tomorrow, however, in the Greene King Maiden Stakes over six furlongs. It would be unwise to underestimate her chances.
Rock Anthem (4.45), a previous course winner, and Chatterer (5.50), who is nothing if not consistent, are two others to keep on the right side of at Goodwood.
Tony McCoy could be the jockey to follow at the Ffos Las jumps meeting. The champion jockey has winning chances on Old Wigmore and The Romford Pele, both trained Rebecca Curtis.
Old Wigmore, a winning bumper horse, developed into a useful hurdler last season and has always looked the type to make a chaser. He makes his debut over fences in the Llewellyn Humphreys Novices’ Chase over three miles and is fancied to come up trumps.
The Romford Pele had more than his fair share of supporters on his debut at Stratford last month when he was sent off the odds-on favourite, only to finish second. He had clearly shown a fair amount of ability prior to that race and, with an outing under his belt, he deserves another chance to prove his worth.
Malton-born Andrew Tinkler is fancied to start the meeting on a winning note aboard Arctic Actress.
Nicky Henderson’s mare won a bumper at Fakenham at the beginning of the season before being given a summer break.
She looks the type to continue to pay her way and the Trustmark Design And Print Mares’ Maiden Hurdle looks an ideal starting point for her jumping career.
Graeme McPherson, who has his horses in good form, has a useful chance with The Good Guy (3.20), while recent Bangor winner Rampant Ronnie (4.25), trained by Alison Thorpe, is also worthy of attention.
