Cheltenham may host the best of the jumping action today, but Doncaster racegoers are in for a treat courtesy of seeing one of the top novice hurdlers of last season going over fences for the first time in public.

Sprinter Sacre is on many people’s list as a horse to follow this season and his reappearance in the Atteys Solicitors Novices’ Chase is eagerly awaited.

Trained at Lambourn by Nicky Henderson, Sprinter Sacre, unbeaten in two bumpers, has won four of his six races and finished third to Al Ferof in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.

The Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham next March will be his prime objective this term provided he cuts the mustard in his new discipline. David Bass has the task this afternoon of getting him around two miles in one piece and at the head of affairs at the end.

Mick Easterby takes him on with recent Hexham winner Lightening Rod but, pretty useful horse that he is, the six-year-old is likely to be put in the shade by Sprinter Sacre, who represents the class horse at Doncaster.

Henderson complicates matters by saddling two runners in the VictorChandler.com Novices’ Hurdle and Charlie Wingnut is preferred to his stablemate Dark Shadow.

Although he has yet to jump a hurdle in public, Charlie Wingnut is a horse with bags of potential. He finished a close-up second on his only start in a bumper at Bangor last season. It would be no surprise to see him go one better on his hurdling bow.

Nawton trainer David O’Meara is fancied to be successful with Classical Mist in the Play Casino At Victor Chandler Mares’ Handicap Hurdle.

Although a beaten favourite last time out at Wetherby, where she finished fourth, Classical Mist may have been undone that day by the soft ground. She had previously won on a sounder surface at Uttoxeter and conditions today should suit her well.

Also worth noting on Town Moor are Slam (1.35) and Royal Kicks (2.45), two horses who should have benefited from their respectable seasonal debuts.

At Wolverhampton tomorrow, Richard Fahey has two useful strings to his bow in his bid to win the featured £16,000 totetrifecta Handicap.

The Malton trainer saddles both Mull Of Killough and Justonefortheroad, both of whom have solid chances. Marginal preference is for Mull Of Killough, who has turned in two solid performances on the all-weather since finishing a close-up fifth in a hot handicap at Newmarket in the final lap of the turf season.

Blinkers are applied for the first time here and Shane Kelly is in the saddle.

Tim Easterby’s Ryedane (6.20), a winner here two starts ago, did not enjoy the best of luck when fourth in his latest course appearance. He can resume winning ways under Adam Carter, who has been riding him lately.

Bahamian Lad (6.50), who got back on top on his latest outing after a series of respectable efforts, warrants plenty of respect, as does Bajan Tryst (9.20), who is awarded the nap vote.

Although he was disappointing after making the running at Lingfield last time out, Kevin Ryan’s smart sprinter had previously scored at Dundalk.

A reproduction of that form would give him a big chance here.
