Selby Town’S new manager Dave Heard has made a stunning start to his tenure.

With the Robins in a dire run of form this season, they turned to former Haxby United boss Heard and he has achieved back to back wins.

His side saw off Winterton Rangers in the FA Vase in his opening game and then defeated Arnold Town 4-3 to move off the bottom of the Northern Counties East Football League premier division.

Wetherby-based Heard said one of his main aims was to “settle the squad” after their turbulent start, which saw them go 11 games without a win.

The new boss, who brought seven of his Haxby squad to Flaxley Road, said: “The players in the squad are 110 per cent committed in the long run and they feel happy and positive for the season ahead.” The most eye-catching of the new recruits has been Craig Heard, the manager’s son.

He followed up his brace in the Vase with a match-winning hat-trick against Arnold.

However, Heard senior said: “It is clearly a team effort – we win as a team and lose as team.

“Craig’s scoring is as much down to the good service provided to him by our pass and move tactics as it is to his consistency in front of goal.”

Realistically, Heard hopes to consolidate Selby’s position in the table, while blooding local youth players throughout the campaign.

“We’ve got good young players who are local to Selby and are willing to see out the duration at Selby Town,” said Heard, who previously managed Harrogate Town reserves for six years.

“The experience of the team will pick up through out the season and I hope to push for promotion next year.”

Robins officials are hoping the resurgence under Heard will attract Selby supporters back to the club to back his newly-formulated team.

They have an FA Vase tie against Askern Villa to look forward to on October 22, while their next assignment is an NCEL clash with Hall Road Rangers on Saturday.
