SIMON Dyson’s Accenture adventure among the world’s elite corps of golfers ended at the first hurdle.

The York-born world number 54 was beaten 3 and 1 in the WGC-Accenture World Match-play Championship tournament at Tuscon, Arizona by America’s Sean O’Hair, who is ranked number 16 in the world.

After a sensational start, the 32-year-old was then pegged back by O’Hair and Dyson was left on the fringe of the match before finally bowing out at the 17th hole of his first encounter.

Dyson got off to an absolute flier at the Ritz Carlton club on Dove Mountain.

He birdied the first two holes to go two up on the American. But the pivotal turning-point was made on holes four, five and six which O’Hair won to tip the balance.

By the turn O’Hair was three up as he took command. Dyson countered by taking the tenth, but the arrears widened on the very next hole, which the American won.

There was another rally on the 16th which was seized by the Malton & Norton GC ace leaving him to have to win the last two holes to force the tie into a sudden-death shoot-out.

But that hope was quickly extinguished on the 17th. O’Hair prevailed on that hole to win 3 and 1 and end Dyson’s interest in the star-studded tournament.

England’s Ross McGowan provided the biggest shock of the opening round of matches when he knocked out top seed and world number two Steve Stricker with a birdie putt of nearly 30 feet on the first extra hole.

Lee Westwood now has a chance to take the world number two spot if he can lift the title. He opened with a 3 and 1 win over fellow Englishman Chris Wood.
