THREE of the area’s most promising teens enjoyed a terrific impact when they starred for Yorkshire.

The trio of James Walker of The Oaks Golf Club, Sam Wilkinson from Fulford GC and Nathan Brader, of Malton & Norton GC, were all in the county’s under-16s ranks that toppled their North of England counterparts and then sampled a win over Wales.

All three have previously played for the York Union of Golf Clubs’ boys’ team in which their performances earned the call-up to the county set-up.

Walker, aged 16, is the son of The Oaks head professional and former European Tour ace Graham Walker.

Now in his seventh year as a member of the club, Walker junior is a former junior captain at The Oaks.

He, Wilkinson, who is only 14 years of age, and Brader all won their singles matches in the victory over North of England at Stressholme GC, near Darlington, with Wilkinson also triumphant in his foursomes.

In the clash against Wales, at Conway, the three lads also won all their singles.

Meanwhile, The Oaks GC are to hold a two-day academy this summer for the club’s juniors.

Head pro Walker and fellow professional Lysa Jones will run the academy assisted by European Tour professional Danny Willett, who is coached by Walker.

Funds for the academy course were raised when Willett put himself “up for auction” to play a round of golf with three people at the sports dinner held at The Oaks in February.

The bid for Willett raised twice as much as four corporate tickets for the Manchester v Chelsea collision at old Trafford earlier this month.

ON the Mark at Fulford GC was Mark Goldsborough who posted a dazzling ten-under-par nett 62 to win the club’s monthly medal by four shots. As a result his handicap was trimmed from 14 to four.

Former York Rugby League Club captain Geoff Hunter is the new Fulford captain with Pat Boden the new ladies captain The drive-in mixed team competition was won by Tony Hinder, Bill Coatsworth, Jackie Thompson and Kaye Bradley with 87 stableford points.

RUTH WADDILOVE celebrated the start of her year as lady captain of Forest Park Golf Club by winning her own drive-in competition.

Waddilove won at the Stockton-on-the-Forest course with 37 points, with Lisa Debenham second and Sonia Harris third.
