YORK-BORN golfer Simon Dyson’s esteemed coach, Pete Cowen, has scooped a double honour at the 2010 UK National Coaching Awards.

Sheffield-based Cowen, who has also helped to guide Lee Westwood to world number one, was named coach of the year and also high-performance coach of the year in a glittering ceremony at The Brewery, London.

Cowen’s charges have had a storming year. Besides Westwood toppling Tiger Woods to the top position in the world, Graeme McDowell won the US Open and Louis Oosthuizen took the Open with Westwood second.

Cowen beat off strong competition from England cricket coach Andy Flower and Great Britain’s boxing performance director Rob McCracken.

Said Kyle Phillpots, PGA director of education and career development: “Pete has been an outstanding PGA professional for many years and many of his players have had great success on tour.”
