ANOTHER uphill battle in the dunescape of the desert faced North Yorkshire’s Simon Dyson today.

The 33-year-old golfer was battling to make the half-way cut after toiling to a three-over-par opening round of 75 in the Volvo Championships in Bahrain.

It was a topsy-turvy round for the world number 66.

Starting on the tenth hole, he was quickly two shots to the good with successive birdies on holes 11 and 12. But heading towards the turn his round suffered a major calamity.

Dyson dropped four shots in the space of five holes, including double-bogeying the par-four 15th.

The inward nine began with a much-needed birdie, but that was erased by further dropped shots on the second and fourth holes to leave him 11 shots shy of the leader, Sweden’s Johan Edfors.

Harrogate Golf Club’s John Parry carded a steady level-par 72.
