North Yorkshire youngsters have had the opportunity to experience professional Rugby Union coaching, writes Martin Durrant.

Leeds Carnegie’s Summer Rugby Union Camp came to York RUFC’s Clifton Park ground for three days.

The participants, aged between seven and 12, had the chance to receive professional coaching and meet Leeds Carnegie players and they drew a superb reaction from the willing youngsters.

“The response to our camp in York has been fantastic” said John Bentley, former Leeds and British and Irish Lions winger, who is heavily involved with the camps.

“We have got a lot of supporters in York and it was brilliant that they were able to meet up with the players and wish them well for the new season.”

The youngsters were split into groups, with the under sevens and under eights together for tag rugby and the under nines to under 12s together for rugby skills including contact.

Each participant also received a Leeds Carnegie goodie bag, including a branded water bottle, official t-shirt and drawstring bag, as well as a ticket to see Leeds Carnegie in their first game of the season.

“Most importantly, the kids had a great time and we will definitely be back in the future” added Bentley.

Leeds Carnegie’s next game is against London Welsh at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on September 4, kick off at 2.30pm.
