OLD pals Chris Smith and Adrian Leek go head to head on Saturday.

Smith, Heworth ARLFC’s player coach takes his side to West Bowling in National Conference division two where Leek, his friend and former assistant coach at White Rose Avenue, will be waiting.

Leek helped Smith guide Heworth to promotion in the 2008/9 season before leaving to play for Siddal and now West Bowling.

With both players set to go up against each other at stand-off, Heworth club spokesman Ken Sykes reckons it could make for quite a battle.

“It is Adrian’s club,” said Sykes of West Bowling.

“He was assistant coach to Chris Smith and was with us for a couple of years and when we got promoted.

“They could both be playing stand-off so will be directly in opposition and it could give the game a little bit more in that respect.

“It will certainly add a little more edge.”

With both sides having won one and lost two of their opening three games, Sykes believes the match will give Heworth a good indication of how their season might pan out.

“I think we will be fairly similar to quite a few teams,” he added.

“We have had two fairly close games and Saturday will be no different.

“We beat West Bowling at the back end of last season so that might give them an added incentive. We are expecting a tough game.”
