York City goalkeeping coach Simon Miotto has left Bootham Crescent with manager Martin Foyle unable to offer him a full-time role.

Miotto, 40, joined the Minstermen’s backroom staff during the second half of last season but budget constraints mean the affable Australian has missed out on an extension to his contract.

Despite failing to make a senior appearance, the ex-Hartlepool and Raith Rovers stopper was also registered as a player during his stint with City and his departure will hasten Foyle’s search for an understudy to Michael Ingham – the only senior stopper on the books following the release of Josh Mimms, who has joined Gateshead on trial.

About the reluctant loss of Miotto, City chief Foyle said: “We can’t keep Simon because we are unable to employ a full-time goalkeeping coach next season. He’s been great but we’ve got to go part-time again and get somebody in two to three days a week.

“He was enthusiastic and very organised and I thought you could see both ’keepers’ sharpness improve during his time here. He will be missed but unfortunately we are where we are.”

Foyle had originally indicated Miotto’s future might be decided by the greater need to improve the club’s scouting network but the City boss is now hoping to find a sponsor to assist with that matter.

The City boss added, meanwhile, that he expects the deal to bring Forest Green Rovers midfielder Jonathan Smith to be concluded prior to the players’ return for pre-season training on Wednesday.

Crawley Town have won the race for the signature of Salisbury striker Matt Tubbs.

The Red Devils splashed out £70,000 for the England ‘C’ international, who had interested Foyle.

Cambridge United have also spent £10,000 on Gateshead marksman Daryl Clare in a two-year deal but Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Mansfield Town have lost fellow forward Jake Speight, who has finalised a £25,000 transfer to Bradford City.

AFC Wimbledon, meanwhile, have signed midfielder Rashid Youssuf from Gillingham.

Elsewhere, former York City manager John Ward has signed out-of-contract Barrow midfielder Andy Bond for Colchester and Wrexham’s Welsh international defender Neil Taylor has completed a move to Championship outfit Swansea.

Jamie Cook has rejoined Crawley from Oxford, while Michael Blackwood has left Tamworth for Brackley Town and ex-Minsterman Janos Kovacs has departed Luton for Hereford.

Fleetwood Town have recruited John Miles and Paul Linwood from Accrington Stanley and Grimsby Town respectively.
