FULL-BACK convert Daniel Parslow believes York City will soon be climbing the league ladder if they can recreate their FA Cup heroics against Rotherham every week.
The 25-year-old says the challenge is now on for the Minstermen to reproduce the display which brought a 0-0 draw with the Millers in Blue Square Bet Premier action.
Parslow was one of City’s key men in that first round stalemate – shackling £1 million-rated striker Adam Le Fondre and ensuring a replay at Bootham Crescent on Wednesday, November 17 (7.45pm).
Having “proved” they were up to the task against League opposition, Parslow said the players are gradually getting to grips with the way manager Gary Mills wants to play.
“The gaffer said at full time that to be disappointed with a 0-0 draw, and to come to Rotherham and do that, does show how well we can play,” he said. “It gives us plenty of confidence for the replay.
“I think they played a new system with three up and Le Fondre on the left. You could see he was a threat and we gave him respect but it was one of his quieter days and, hopefully, we can do the same next week.
“Everyone likes to be tested against League opposition and I think every single one of us proved we were up to it.
“The gaffer said we need to keep showing this sort of form and turning it into weekly performances. If we can build on performances like this then we will, hopefully, climb the table.
“At the minute we are trying to do the right things.
“The gaffer’s trying to get across his style of football and I think we are, slowly, picking that style up.
“These things, I suppose, take time – it’s the same old excuses – but I think the fans can see, and everyone on the pitch realises, we are picking it up.
“Hopefully we can change these losses into wins.
“The gaffer has come in and he wants to play a certain way.
“He loves to pass the ball and, on Saturday, I think we showed that when we do get the ball we are good enough to play and, when we don’t, we get our shape and are hard to break down.
“Everyone knows their jobs and we are very organised.”
A feature of Parslow’s play in recent weeks has been his willingness to overlap and drive into attacking positions – despite being more comfortable at centre-back.
“With the formation, 4-5-1 or 4-3-3, there is plenty of space for the full-back to drive forward,” he added.
“I enjoy it, it’s relatively new to me but I can’t keep using that excuse anymore because I am playing right-back quite regularly these days.
“Slowly but surely I am getting a little bit more comfortable on the ball, which has probably been a weakness of mine, but like the gaffer has said I have to just keep wanting the ball and being an option – helping to create chances.
“I am no-one to shout and moan and I am just happy to be playing.
“If it’s full-back, I will do my best for the team.”
