YORK City Knights will not consider bringing Wayne McHugh back to Huntington Stadium after the three-quarter was suddenly released by arch-rivals Hunslet yesterday.

The 29-year-old has left the John Charles Stadium under an apparent cloud, with Hawks chiefs shedding no light on the departure other than to say it was an internal matter with an investigation under way.

McHugh, previously a prolific try-scorer with Featherstone, Dewsbury and Rochdale, bagged 28 tries to end as this year’s Championship One top try-scorer as Hunslet stormed to the title.

He was also named in the division’s Team of the Year, but when asked if the Knights would be interested in re-signing him, general manager Ian Wilson said: “No.”

McHugh had played 11 times for the Knights in 2009, scoring four tries and 16 goals, before effectively being transfer-listed in July that year after an apparent fall-out, soon joining the Hawks.

He had been a controversial figure in the past, being given a 24-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, in April 2009 for a drink driving offence while on prison licence following a nine-month term for perverting the course of justice.

He was also given a two-year ASBO in 2006 banning him from every pub in his home town of Castleford after he pleaded guilty to an assault charge, just a month after he was banned from driving for two years for driving without insurance.
