A YORK-based healthcare company is vying for two titles in this year’s Business Press awards.
Benenden Health is in the running for Employer of the Year and Socially Responsible Business of the Year.
They say: “We are a health and wellbeing not-for-profit organisation providing an affordable alternative to health insurance for our members, and we take this just as seriously for our colleagues.”
Benenden Health says it knows it is good to work for, because that’s what staff say.
“Every colleague is important and our inclusive people strategies are focused on developing our colleagues, positively engaging them and building an environment that is a great place to work and one in which they want to build their career,” they explain.
“Wellbeing is embedded into our culture, through our ways of working and people processes, which are all underpinned by how we promote a culture of care, respect, compassion and wellbeing with our ‘be caring’ value.
“In 2018 we had ‘excellent’ levels of engagement in wellbeing in our Best Companies survey with health and wellbeing initiatives and the support they get from their manager cited as two of the many reasons why we are a great place to work.”
Several colleagues have been trained to be Mental Health First Aiders as part of a focus on positive mental health in the firm’s workplace.
They say: “Another wellbeing initiative that is very popular is free fruit. Although a small token each week, it encourages colleagues to think about a healthy lifestyle, which is also promoted with our free onsite gym, used by colleagues every day.
“Colleagues take part in volunteering which links the benefits of social interaction, physical exercise and fulfilling our commitment to give back to our community.”
The firm says social responsibility is “embedded within our organisation’s values, it is at the heart of how we treat our colleagues and engage with the wider community.”
They explain: “Our approaches to sustainability and giving back to others are aligned with our business strategy.”
