A North Yorkshire waste disposal company has announced completion of the first phase of a £10 million investment in the business which will increase its turnover by £5 million over the next two years – and create 20 new local jobs.

Mosleys of Topcliffe has installed a new line of cutting-edge aerobic composting tanks with the capacity to process up to 40,000 tons of food waste each year, and this figure will double over the next few months with the introduction of a second line of equipment.

Now Simon Mosley, son of Roger who founded the business 36 years ago, is entering the firm for both the Think Green Business Of The Year and Science & Technology Business Of The Year categories.

Mosleys will soon further upgrade its waste processing capability with a new £8 million anaerobic digester, creating a state-of-the-art waste processing site that will enable the company to recycle around 95 per cent of the products it handles into organic fertiliser.

The company has recently applied for PAS 100 accreditation from the British Standards Institute, which will allow it to sell this fertiliser to the general public.

As well as reducing the emission of harmful landfill gases, anaerobic digestion also produces biogas, a renewable energy source which is a greener alternative to fossil fuels. So Mosleys will be able to export this fuel by-product to the National Grid.

As a result of its enhanced capabilities, Mosleys recently signed an agreement with Northallerton-based waste management company Yorwaste to provide a treatment and recovery operation for the company’s food waste.
