HAVING reached the finals in the Small Business Of The Year in 2009, this time Jane Bond of RJB Couriers Ltd plans to scoop the title.

Her Clifton Moor courier company last year powered through the recession, only slightly below its sales target of £400,000 and with new contracts in the bag and in the pipeline, turnover is expected to be more than £600,000 this financial year.

Jane and husband, Richard, began the business in Landalewood Road while they were both employed, but afterwards both left work to concentrate on RJB Couriers, while she also cared for their two small children. Lewis, now 11 and Harriet, two and a half.

To them they have since added Amelia, six months and “life continues to be a case of super-efficient multi-tasking.”

Overheads have remained the same profits are up 66 per cent on last year, reflecting the fact that the firm has become a registered supplier for the NHS, northern councils and “blue light” emergency services Today they have three vehicles but often turn to contract hire to cope with demand and while they have three full time staff in York, they are forced to use sub contractors to handle the growing volume of work.

The business is easily coping with the recession also largely because it has no debt, no overdraft, no business credit card – no borrowing in any shape or form. “We rely on the business generating its own capital.”.

As the couple both worked in the field of customer care, how they treat clients is paramount.

As the customer base expanded, so did the service offered, including same-day deliveries, next-day deliveries, overnight work and multi-dropping. We also have a 5,000 sq ft storage area for use by pallet customers and others. “We are very proud of ourselves,” she said
