NOT only is York graphic design agency, United By Design, attracting a range of big and small clients, it is helping to grow the talent of the future.

The agency, which recently developed a new logo, website, brochure and corporate stationery for the Mansion House in York, has also been involved in a number of local educational projects to encourage young people into careers in design.

The business, founded by Owen Turner in 2007, is entering the business for Small Business Of The Year and Best Employer and Education Link at The Press Business Awards 2011.

United By Design was selected the first company to take part in York St John University’s Graduate Internship Scheme, and its design graduate, Annabel Eager, has since been employed full-time by the company and was a finalist in the Yorkshire Internship Awards 2010.

Owen, who participated in York St John University’s Acorns programme three years ago, has since returned to run workshops for participants on the importance of design and branding for business.

He also works with six schools on an entrepreneurship programme in Selby, and for two years with the Young Enterprise Company Programme at St Peter’s School in York.

Owen said one of its most successful projects was the re-branding of the Sloe Motion drinks company, which experienced an increase in sales of 26 per cent and interest from major retailers as a result of the rebranding.

He said: “Our main criterion is always design effectiveness. It’s not just about creating something that looks good, but also about focusing on the needs and wants of the company to create a proactive brand strategy that will deliver the required results.”
