A NEW film company set up by York students is hoping to make a name for itself at film festivals around the world.

Glass Cannon, which creates its own short films and animations, as well as doing commissioned film work for clients, is also hoping to make a name for itself locally, in The Press Business Awards 2012.

The company’s four-strong team, three of whom graduates of York St John University’s Film and Television Production course, have already won awards on the short film festival circuit.

Richard Jacobs, director of animation, runs the business with Stewart Sparke, Lisa Power and Anna Bennett Squire, said the company also intends to run animation workshops after originally coming together after holding workshops for the The Big Draw, which aims to raise the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. Glass Cannon’s animated film The White Bear is currently being entered into film festivals and the business created an animated short film for Jorvik Viking Festival which was projected against the walls of Cliffords Tower earlier this year.

Mr Jacobs said: “We put as much passion and energy in our original films as our commissioned work, in the knowledge that displaying work at film festivals and elsewhere will inevitably make a name for ourselves as business with a reputation for creativity and world class quality.

“We have aspirations to create film on a cinematic and global level, and with a small but dedicated team at the helm we have no doubt it can be achieved. We may be young and small, but we are growing every day.”
